Why did meiji really not like superstitions and folklore? Was he really embarassed about it when the west introduced science? That's what I was told.
Good question. Emperor Meiji thought that certain beliefs that weren't scientific to be a barrier to “progress” so he decreed that some subjects should be banned and all of its related books and scrolls would be burned. It was illegal to owned certain content relating to traditional magic, yokai and other supernatural things for example. There was also some changes to how the class system was followed so it was less feudal and education as a whole was restructured completely to follow a more western approach. Was he embarassed? Maaaybe. Nothing good comes out of book burning and censorship but he did do certain things that propelled Japan for the 20th century.
