a year and a half ago I posted in the old forums about Nandeyanen
and its meaning. It got so much attention that I thought I'd bring
it back into the new forum and redirect the old post to this one.
Let's get straight to it...[br][br]First, let's talk about the
Kansai dialect. There are different dialects in Japan and Kansai is
one of them which is not as polite as the kansai dialect. I've
written a pretty interesting piece about it in this thread
here
so be sure to read up on it.[br][br]The meaning: Nandeyanen pretty
much means "what the hell?" or "you've got to be kidding me!". It's
an expression that is rough to translate but whenever you see
subtitles, it'll likely say either one.[br][br]It's a fun thing to
say but if you do say it as a foreigner, it won't leave a good
first impression. Typical characters from Dorama and Anime that
uses this are delinquents and the yakuza but it's often used for
comedic expression these days. Unless you have tatoos, I doubt
anyone will accuse you of being a yakuza when using slang like this
but be sure to use proper etiquette, understand honne and tatemae
(view
editorial on this here) and try to be as poilte as you can
when speaking Japanese especially to those older than
you.[br][br]Japanese people are easy to impress with just a few
Japanese words, but if they're words like nandeyanen, they'll be
less then impressed. =)[br][br]PS: Be sure to register an account
