The year was 2002, I was watching a show about the future and how augmented reality might one day be a part of our daily lives. Smart phones didn't exist, and neither did wearable computers, they were just ideas and even just as ideas my first instinct was to want to see a Pokemon MMORPG Augmented Reality game, but then -- who didn't think of this?Sounds intense, but what exactly would that be like? Imagine wearing Microsoft Hololens or Google Glass, perhaps you're just using your phone but one way or another you're running the Pokemon app and what you see on the screen is a video of what's happening now in real-life in front of you but with an added twist. You see, Augmented reality is just as the name suggests, it augments reality so what you see on the screen also has digital components such as characters roaming around and displays that you can't see in real life.
The idea was to capture and battle Pokemon wherever you went and to have anyone else in the area see what you're looking at as if this is their reality as well. This means for anyone running that app, they are all collectively sharing the same screen, watching you capturing a Jigglypuff or a Pikachu. If you challenge them they could fight and others could join in on the fun in an all-out brawl. Skip over 13 years and it looks like this game is becoming reality after all.
This is exactly what DeNA West is developing in collaboration with The Pokemon Company. Find Pokemon using Augmented reality, capture them, level them up and fight your friends. They even showcased a concept of a timed battle where dozens of people fought a level 70 Mewtwo during a 10 minute event. It looked awesome and exactly how I always wanted a Pokemon game to be like, but sadly it all seems conceptual because current AR technology is very limited due to the lack of sensors on a phone, but I suppose where they lack on sensors means that their algorithms need to be improved. Perhaps they can make it happen but I won't hold my breath. They also will have a Pokemon wristband called Pokemon Go Plus which is a wearable piece of technology that notifies you if there are any Pokemon nearby which you can see in the conceptual video.
With all that said, it's hard to know how the game will really be like without actually playing it ourselves. It's a dream that most of us had growing up and it raises a lot of legal questions because we've seen people sue GPS companies and win when they followed the road off a cliff or something silly like that. Now imagine a kid with a smartphone being told there's a rare Pokemon in a sketchy area of town or on Train tracks. I believe that they will include a warning tutorial and that it should only played with the guidance of a parent or guardian (but we all know kids won't ever care). What do you all think about this concept? Will you be getting it? Leave a comment below and get jPoints!
