What I'm about to describe to you is going to blow your mind, you know how holograms have become more a thing in the past 10-years or so? Well, if you haven't then consider going to youtube and search holographic concerts, it's pretty big from Hatsune Miku concerts to Micheal Jackson and there may even be one near you!Well, having images display in 3D space without the need of special glasses is nothing new, in fact the first holographic "television" was unveiled in 2011 by Burton based on technology developed by ISNK University. This is what they displayed in 2011:The difference between that example and the 3DS, or 3D Cellphones is that most 3D glasses-less technology relies on tricking your mind instead of artificially creating an object in real-space and if you're cross-eyed, only have one eye, or what have you, 3D "tricks" won't work anymore and in most cases they are uncomfortable and may even give headaches. Not only that but they cannot be seen by children because they cause brain growth problems. The solution to this is to have real 3D, a 3D without the need of glasses or tricks, a true holographic projection. As mentioned earlier, this quest was reached in 2011 but we're now in the middle of 2014 and we beg the questions "what now and what's next?"Well, this is where Tokyo University and NHK comes in. For those that don't know, NHK is a public broadcasting company in Japan which are also ahead in a lot of research technologies such as 8K Television sets and recording devices for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Tokyo University has been working on a device which can measure the dimensions and hardness of an object in three dimensions simultaneouslywhich from what can be gathered translates to true holographic projections like previously shown although this could not be the case as this cannot be verified at this time. I just confirmed it, it's simply a projection from a glass mirror.NHK has also been working on their own little project with them called the Touch/Force Display. This technology is a lot like an accessory to a console, think of it as a game controller. Place these tactile sensor devices(?) underneath the hologram and it begins sending vibrations in the air where you can kind of touch the object presented in front of you. This is how it looks like in practice:

As you can see, you can touch objects or rather a frying egg (what, really?) and kind of feel like it's there. The technology is primitive and in it early stages however NHK strongly believes that true holographic broadcasting is the next big thing after 8k broadcasting of course. At any rate, in my opinion the likelihood of seeing this technology in practice will probably come first in Arcades across Japan, technology museums and airport advertisements. What do you think of this technology? Are you looking forward to it or do you think it's just another 3D trend to flush down the toilet like the last three? Have you already realized what the dark side of Japan will likely do with this technology?Comment below and remember if you're a guest, membership is free and your privacy is safe!
