What happened to Sky City 1000 you ask?
The legendary Sky City 1000 has been featured in numerous publications since its original conception in 1989 by the Takenaka Corporation. In the past decade, its popularity continued to grow strong and even was featured in numerous documentaries around the world including a few on the Science / Discovery Channel, which is where I originally heard about it back in 2003.Sky City 1000 was projected to be the next evolution in cities as it was to become a super skyscraper beyond anything we have even today. This means that it would have supported over 160,000 people within its massive structure, including malls, food courts, parks, and recreation centers.

Inside Sky City 1000
Why was this project even proposed in the first placed? Because Sky City 1000 was conceptualized at the height of Japan's economic growth, it was booming like a gold rush and so was population. The rise in population increased the rarity of land and the rarity of land meant it would become more expensive to own. With this in mind, businesses spend an enormous amount of money just on land property, but a project like Sky City 1000 would have reduced this cost considerably.Eventually Sky City 1000 would have been reproduced two-more times and then linked together to create something that you would only find in a science fiction film of the 24th century.

I know, this looks ridiculous and probably designed by a mad-man but I assure you that this project was taken quite seriously for some time. However there were a lot of problems with this project. The first problem is how much resources it would need to be developed. Due to the sheer size of the monolith, it would require state-of-the-art materials to keep it up-straight and to produce enough materials, it would have to push smelting corporations to their limits for many decades to come, some argue that it could take up to 80-years to produce. The second problem is where to put it. The proposed location in Tokyo is necessary for the size of the building. This isn't like building in central U.S., no, it's building on the edge of an Island. I'm sure you could imagine how difficult it would be to solidify the land underneath it (deep underneath) and to have it earthquake-ready, especially during construction. It wouldn't be too pleasant if a 3000ft+ "flying" city came crashing down. Not to mention the soil in Japan isn't made to build buildings too high up.The third problem is getting people to move.... For like a hundred years. You don't build ROME in a day, but sometimes it's more important to not build Rome due to the consequences that it entails. Consider having to tell tens of thousands of home owners that they need to move, businesses would have to shut down, and basically any access to the highway in that location would be blocked. Sure, eventually the outcome would be great but it's a long process, it's super expensive, especially since you have to buy all the houses, land and compensation for moving because you can't just kick people out of their homes easily. The fourth problem is whether or not Japan is ready to invest into something so big. I've mentioned earlier that the cost is pretty high up but I didn't mention how stupendous it is. The projected cost is in the billions, but that varies entirely on new technologies and the politics behind it. In this economy, while Japan may still be doing fairly well, it's not ideal.

So is this project a dud? I believe so. There's little evidence that this project is still on-going, and considering the development time-frame of this project, it's absurd to believe that it'll become more than a dream any time soon. I think we should just move on and silently wish that this had been built because our inner Japanese-geek side of us wanted to see it within our lifetime. But that's alright, there are other proposed projects at this point in time, and should any one of those projects get accepted, you'll be one of the first to know. Until then, let's just keep learning Japanese together and build our own Sky City of our own on Jappleng smile
Once again, this page is from a old section called News in Japan which hasn't been a thing since about 2016. But Jappleng has a lot more to offer such as:
