There's an ever continuing war between the citizens of South Korea and Japan as Koreans refuse to accept the past as the past and Japan refusing to apologize or compensate. This time, Koreans were protesting at the Japanese embassy in Seoul, Korea to demand an apology and compensation for the use of "
comfort women" in the 1930's and 40's. Comfort women were sex slaves used for Japanese soldiers whom wanted to relieve stress. This atrocious act has resulted in about 200,000 Korean victims and left most if not all victims scarred for life. Since then, Japan has helped established the Asian Women's Fund which is an assisted government program for comfort women victims and apologized for the atrocities that has happened in the past.Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe (Japan) added fuel to the fire recently when he personally stated that he does not believe that these women were coerced by Japanese imperials for their brothels. The protest at topic is in retaliation of this comment, denial of Japanese history and the denial of Korean compensation. Many of these victims were left unable to bear children after years of physical and sexual abuse which haunts survivors even to this day.During the protest at the Japanese embassy today, an 80-year-old man light himself on fire but was extinguished and taken to the hospital with only minor burns. Many spectators were beating down the flames with blankets and fire extinguishers. It is estimated that there are less than 100 comfort women victims alive today and later this week will mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.
