The anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd, most popularly known from its Discovery TV series “Whale Wars” has agreed to pay $2.55 million in damages to Japan’s Institute of Cetacean Research for “obstruction of whaling vessels”.Back in December 2014, there was an injunction banning obstruction and assaults to the Japanese government-funded whaling fleet however the Sea Shepherd ignored the injunction and continued to obstruct the whaling fleet and as a result the Sea Shepherd had to pay $2.55 million in damages. The U.S. Supreme Court denied the appeal and found the Sea Shepherd in contempt of injunction. Despite this, the Sea Shepherd looks forward to going to court
(filed by the Japanese) as they expect to be able to expose the institute’s dangerous and illegal activities in the Ocean, Sea Shepherd said. Allegedly the vessels and other assets belong in other nations such as Australia, a country that tends to be in full support of anti-whaling activities.
