Lately the headlines have been reading that in the U.S. Google Glass a wearable display and interaction unit (
easier if I just say HUD display on a pair of glasses) has been getting some concerns. These concerns generally involves privacy, and whether or not it's really that safe for us eager humans to sport a display overlapping our vision. This quest may end up in supreme court one way or another but let's cut to the chase and talk about how Japan may end up not supporting it.You see, in Japan there are many laws that
TRY and deter off predators and their perverted ways and it may work sometime but for the most part it doesn't as the culture in Japan tends to avoid attention towards themselves when they get publicly humiliated. If you want to learn how to protect yourself, take a look over at
JVShare for a video about how to do so. Returning to topic, Japan has laws where you can't take pictures without a shutter sound, and you can't take a video without permission and overall it's just seen as something very rude whether the law is there or not.Google Glass however is like the most delicious cake you could ever imagine. On the outside it looks wonderful, and the concept of being able to know what time it is without pulling out your watch, or seeing a 3D arrow on where you have to walk to is incredible. However on the inside it's loaded with dangerous privacy concerns because it is also a video camera. To wear Glass in Japan will pose a lot of legal questions.
Legal Question #1) Will you require permission from everyone you walk by to use your product in the public?Legal Question #2) Will you have to inform other people that you are recording?Legal Question #3) How will this affect children and innocent people from onlookers with glass? ie: Glancing at chests or
up a leg?Legal Question #4) Will this pose any serious distraction to drivers, bystanders, cyclists, and people in general as they use them?I'm no lawyer and this is all just my opinion but I believe that if Google wants to make an impression in Japan, they will have a challenging battle ahead of them. Perhaps we as a civilization are not ready for such a product. We do value our privacy and we tend to prefer not being on someone's hard drive. Perhaps, people wearing Google Glass will be seen as perverts or bad people in general? I don't know, but I hope that the technology isn't misused. I've always wanted to wear something like that.
