Have you ever wondered what would happen if you downloaded copyrighted material in Japan and what it would do to you? Well, until recently, it was illegal without any ramifications. So you could technically download music and movies illegally without being prosecuted. However this is now changing and now people in Japan caught illegally downloading copyrighted material can face up to 10-years in prison and/or a maximum of 10 million Yen in fines. However these are the maximum sentences that can be given, and out of presumption, it would take a lot in order to get sentenced and or fined by that amount. This however is not what what makes people outraged, but rather the privacy issues that are involved in all of this. In order for people to be caught, there needs to be a tracking system by the ISP, and this tracking system may monitor just about anything on the user's side. This means that your privacy is violated even if you don't commit any crimes. But as the old tyrannical saying goes "if you haven't done anything wrong, you shouldn't have something to hide".But why piracy? What made these corporations lobby this bill to pass? Well, it's being claimed that piracy is a huge loss on the media industry, and claims that over $4.36bn is lost due to pirating according to a presentation done in 2010 by the RIAA. However, what they don't tell you is what constitutes for these numbers and as it turns out that the vast majority of that money is due to people not buying ringtones. That's right, the majority of what they are claiming is due to the failed ringtone market. Source:

There is however the concern for privacy and this is a serious thing to be concerned about. It is not only happening in Japan, but everywhere in the world and it's only a matter of time before the thought police are after your keywords.
