What would happen if Tokyo were bombed by a nuclear warhead? What if that bomb were a W-76 or a "Tzar" bomb? How many casualties would there be? How many injuries? What about nuclear fallout?Alex Wellerstein has created this solution to figure it all out, and you can simulate this from just about anywhere in the world. Of course, it's not completely accurate but it gives a good idea on what may happen if one city or many others get nuked.
How does it work?According to Alex Wellerstein himself:
"The original NUKEMAP and NUKEMAP2 are both Google Maps "mashups." This means that they use publicly-available code to modify the way that Google Maps data is displayed (this is the "Google Maps API") along with a custom-built Javascript model to show various nuclear weapons effects. In simpler terms, this means that the NUKEMAP is code that can work with Google Maps technology to show you what happens when a bomb goes off. NUKEMAP2 is essentially the same thing as the original NUKEMAP except the nuclear effects information is based on much more sophisticated coding and models.NUKEMAP3D uses the same models, but uses the Google Earth API to display these in a 3D environment. This allows the visualization of 3D mushroom clouds, for example, by importing cloud models and manipulating them within the browser environment. All of the coding, design, and adaptation of the old Cold War models to modern Javascript was done by myself. The population density dataset was graciously purchased for this use by the Center for History of Physics at the American Institute of Physics, and AIP in general needs to be credited for supporting the NUKEMAP activity."What would happen if a Tzar would land on Tokyo?According to NUKEMAP's calculations, it would cover a very big portion of Japan, killing over 18million people and injuring over 12million. The nuclear conamination would contaminate the sea, mostly up north and would eventually reach parts of Russia, Canada and the US, however from what we've been able to understand from Fukushima, radiation spreads almost worldwide.
Would this mean the end of anime, mechs and maid cafe Japan?I'm afraid so. If a Tzar were dropped on Tokyo, it is likely that almost all of Japan would be contaminated including is resources and farm land. In fact, if a Tzar were dropped on Okinawa AND Tokyo, there would no longer be any survivors. There will certainly be short-term survivors from the blasts, but exposure to such radiation would eventually kill them. What can be learned from these simulations is that it doesn't take much to destroy something pure and beautiful like Japan. That is why it's very important to have the right defense to protect an entire country from these kind of attacks. Additionally, if there were a nuclear explosion, there's no telling just how long it would take before it were safe to live there. Hiroshima and Nagasaki both have people that live there and is a big tourist attraction, but it's still contaminated. No one really knows just how bad it is, but it seems that the people there don't mind. You can try out simulations yourself, not just around Japan but around the world! Remember, we live in a nuclear age where this threat exists and it's important to know just how dangerous these warheads can be. There's a 3D version as well, linked at the top-right of the NUKEMAP's website.
