You may be wondering why I'm posting about the Philippines on a Japanese-centric website. Well, that's because I was married in the Philippines. The typhoon didn't happen anywhere, where I knew anyone but that doesn't mean I don't care about them. In fact I do. I will be doing my part as a volunteer teacher next month and also a volunteer systems administrator for a particular school in the Philippines on top of making donations to the Red cross. Additionally, I had started a donation program to setup a computer lab prior to this incident which can be found here:
http://gogetfunding.com/project/philippine-school-computer-roomNow, the reason why I like the Red Cross is because the majority of the funding does in fact go to helping the situation. Only 9/100 cents are used for something not directly related to the cause. This is why last time when Japan was hit by that big tsunami and earthquakes, I was urging everyone to donate to the Redcross of Japan. This time, the Philippines needs help and a lot of it but in form of money. Why just money you ask? Because the problem comes when people start donating things that they don't need. Sure, they need flip flops and clothes but they don't need any kind of flip flops or clothes. It's a hot country but some people are sending boxes of sweaters and sometimes they are Halloween or Christmas costumes. Nobody will wear those and it becomes a problem for everyone, and even the environment. To make things a lot simpler, donate money because that will help them get the clothes, food, and sandals that they need. The cost of living over there isn't that much, so a simple $10 donation can help a family for a week or two, or buy a family a new wardrobe. Again, with Redcross, 91% of the proceeds go directly to the cause unlike some other shady organizations that don't do anything with the money. Yes, those scams exist unfortunately. Here's the link to the Redcross Philippines:
