February 3rd in Japan is the Setsubun Festival. This is a celebration for the end of winter and beginning of Spring. Setsubun literally means seasonal division. It is not a national holiday but a festival. Traditionally it was to drive away evil and bring in happiness. Although some people are traditional it has become more modernized. Soybeans are thrown in hoe of bringing fortune and there are parades in the streets. Beans are also thrown at houses, temples and shrines. Since these beans are roasted you are to eat as many as your age. When you throw the beans you are soused to shout "Oni wa soto, Fuku wa uchi", which means devils out and happiness in.There are actually many different ways of celebrating it, deending on where you live in Japan.Happy Setsubun! May you have happiness and fortune!
