This morning after having my morning coffee I had decided to update the server and patch vulnerabilities. I had about a 30-minute window to do this and I do this fairly often and never has it had issues. I was a little lazy and didn’t go fetch my extensively long password to create an image of the server before-hand. I figured that it never had a problem before, why should it have a problem today?Foregoing all reasonable protocol that one should take, I opened my terminal (command-line) and began to update my distribution thustly. Approximately after 10 minutes of updates, the server seemed to have updated just fine, no errors, nothing. But then I hear the Jappleng chat giving me error messages, which is an indication that the server went down. No worries I said to myself in a calm inner-voice, it’s only because I didn’t start web server service.I sip my coffee and proceed to initiate the web server service and lowe and behold it would not start. It gave me inconspicuous error messages that I have not seen before, and proceeded with caution. I had only mere minutes before leaving as my day was already scheduled for something else of what is of great importance. Knowing I wouldn’t be back for a few hours, I rushed for answers but alas I found nothing. I shutdown the server in hopes that I could figure out what was the cause of such catastrophe.Upon my return hours later, I spent many hours of research and various attempts at resurrecting the server and it would appear that I had failed. In desperation I proceeded with an emergency protocol that I had developed in the early stages of development should this situation arise. In the hours that continued, I was able to restore the Jappleng server as it was before and determined the cause was a particular module relating to SSL that was causing this commotion. The only cure was to in fact restore to an earlier image but update Jappleng with today’s database / file backup.Upon the completion of the resurrection, I was able to isolate the problem and update the server as needed. The vulnerabilities were patched and no important files or information was lost in this misadventure. The only thing that was lost was my pride. The only time that something will break is when you assume nothing will go wrong.
