Good news everyone!Jappleng's Learning Management Software is ready to go and while some of the minor features aren't yet available, everything else is. If you're ready to resume your studies, now's the time! But before all of that, let's discuss what's new with the LMS.Course-basedBefore, there was only the need for 1 course but the more I thought about it, the more I would realize that it needed to be expansive because there's only so much I can teach but if teachers and tutors around the world can create their own course / lessons, then it would open up Jappleng to be a lot less bias and capable of teaching Japanese in more than one way. So this is how it works...Teacher CoursesTeachers from any school can create their own course on Jappleng. They will have the ability to see student progress, create due dates, assignments, quizzes, and other nifty things. Not everyone can enroll in these classes, they will need a special course code to participate. Teachers cannot make money from these courses and price per student will be better than our competitors. Some teachers can opt for free students depending on the type of school and where they are located. Teacher based courses are for school credit / certificates.Tutor CoursesAnyone can become a tutor but just remember that tutors and teachers alike are all graded by their students. Tutors can charge per lesson or for a full course and they will be competing against other tutors and ranked accordingly. Tutors may optionally hand out certificate of accomplishment and provide 1-on-1 help.Jappleng Exclusive CoursesThese courses are exclusive and as far as I can tell, they will be free to use. They are the alternative lessons that I pride myself in writing. Essentially they will teach the basics. I'm not entirely sure how far these lessons will go, but JPLearn! is scheduled for at least 27 lessons. There will be other exclusive courses in time.New Features- JPLearn! Lessons were all reviewed and modified accordingly- You can enroll in classes- Each class has a review system for both the teacher and the course- About Teacher module is new, and teachers / tutors can write their real name if they desire- Grades now exist. Each lesson/assignment has a set grade to it and tallies to a total amount. If you get perfect, you get a star next to the grade.- Preparations have been made for Quiz-based assignments. "I don't know" will be an option so that you can redo the assignment when you do know to improve your grade.- Vastly improved system means it operates faster, smoother, and works better than before!- Courses get an optional Forum system and comment system- Course List page lists different courses found around Jappleng. Sorting features coming later- Lessons By level is coming soon but it will sort every accessible lesson - Course notifications are created by the course author. They are submitted to a special education folder in the notifications page and on the course's home page. Additionally e-mails are submitted to the students.- New Assignments page helps track which assignments are due and which ones have been completed. It even includes a nifty grade system.- Since we're now on a course-based system, the overall progress is no longer available, but instead it's for the time being based on a course-by-course basis. You can check your course progress in the course progress section (if you're enrolled in the course). This feature is nearly ready.The New Token SystemBecause the cost of maintaining Jappleng is significant and I'm running out of funds, I've been implementing a new Token system. Simply put, you can exchange real money for tokens and then use those tokens for different things around Jappleng. If you want to enroll in a paid-for course, you will have to use tokens to do so and a portion of it goes to Jappleng to support the servers and the rest goes to the tutor for their hard work. If you want to redeem Tokens for other things like J-Points, you'll be able to do so as well. This does not go against my wishes to keep Jappleng free, in fact it's all supplementary if the student wishes to participate. Jappleng exclusive content is free, and just about everything else on Jappleng is free. However, there needs to be something coming in to keep the project rolling so I figured that this would be a great way to give people incentive to write lessons and for students to support Jappleng as well. I think that people will genuinely enjoy this system once they see it functional.ConclusionEvery day Jappleng is getting bigger and better, but it's not over yet! While Friday seems to be the day that Jappleng will have its preliminary phase complete and that people will be invited to come join the site, there's still much work left to do to make Jappleng a one-stop-hub for everything Japanese. New educational features will be added whenever possible and there are so many new features I'm looking forward to implement. Please enjoy what is already available for Jappleng and look forward for new features that are added on a regular basis!
