If you look back far enough perhaps a little over 11 years ago (January 2005), you may have come across a website called Jappleng Blog. Okay, odds are you haven't! Yes, Jappleng was once nothing more than a blog about my path to learning Japanese. But then a year later it became Jappleng News, a blog about east-asian news, a community forum, and also a few lessons about Japanese. Afterwards I became a little more ambitious with Jappleng.2, which was an evolved version of the website, and it gained a lot of attraction particularly because the community was very big! But something came up and I couldn't pay attention to Jappleng anymore, I kept it online for historical reasons but people left, and I couldn't really touch it for years and years.
But then, around 2011 I came up with the idea that Jappleng should be that one thing, that one thing that people have been yearning for. A consolidated website that has it all, a place where someone could learn Japanese however they wanted, learn about the Japanese culture, get the latest news around Japan, have a community to talk about common Japanese interest and have a place to learn Japanese with others online. It would have many motivational features such as achievements, redeemable points for cool prizes, and so on... I called it "Jappleng University".This idea had gone through various revisions, and while I was working with this idea for a few years, it wasn't until 2014 when I became serious and started working on Jappleng University as a dedicated project. After two years of dedication, Jappleng University is a living breathing thing and it's bigger and better than I would have ever imagined it!
I'm still working on finalizing some features and ridding the site of bugs, and we just had a new member join our team (making it a two-person project as of today). On Friday we'll be spreading the word about Jappleng a little bit and next week we'll be going hardcore with content and telling the world! The beauty about Jappleng is that there are no ads, it's free, and personal information is kept safe. Jappleng is https now, important personal information is properly encrypted, the server is secured, and expandable at any moment's notice! Jappleng is HUGE, and we're just getting started. We want to add many new cultural editorials every week, we want to add new lessons every week and get to the point where any member can create their own classrooms instead of relying on our own, we want our social network (J-Spot) to really be awesome and to do that, there will be many more features added to it in the future, and so much more!
While Jappleng is not a company, or a non-profit as of writing this, we want to assure you that Jappleng is primarily a give-back to the community. If you have the opportunity to do something for the world, why not do it? That's what we're doing! So stick around, become a member because it's free for life, and there's really no reason why you wouldn't want to at least give it a shot. I know it's not popular anymore to create an account without using facebook but WE VALUE YOUR PRIVACY unlike them, so that's why our registration system is exclusive!
But ehh, what about those weird e-mail things?- We don't send spam, nor do we trade/give/sell your email or any other information to others- If you don't want newsletters, go to settings and uncheck newsletters.- Don't want notifications whenever someone posts on your jspot wall or any other thing? Uncheck those in your settings!- Tired of having your account? We don't have an option to delete it just yet (too many other features that are in queue to build first), but you can ask us to help you with that and we're kind like that. We doubt you would want to though
Where do I sign up?I'm glad you asked! You can register an account at
https://www.jappleng.com/registerMost importantly, if something is broken, if you like/dislike something, or simply want to make a suggestion we're open to anything! Jappleng is community first! Just let us know how we're doing and we'll try our best to accommodate
Once again, this page is from a old section called News in Japan which hasn't been a thing since about 2016. But Jappleng has a lot more to offer such as:
