About 7 or 8 years ago I wrote an article on the original Jappleng Blog about Halloween in Japan, and Halloween then, is different than what it is now. While there were some Halloween decorations and people dressing up, it wasn't widely adopted or seen too often. Japan already had at least two candy related holidays, valentines day (where girls give guys candy) and white day, where guys return the favor after all.Skip ahead about a decade and you encounter Witches, Ghouls, and Demons quite commonly at least in some major cities. Halloween seemed to have become a fun trend that has been adopted commercially and by the consumers. Halloween parties are a lot more common as well, and if you venture out you just might see groups of people dressed up for the occasion. But it's not just the people dressing up, but also what you come across that has changed. There are Halloween decorations in shops, malls, and in so many places in contrast to ten years ago. There are even parades and commercials celebrating the occasion.
What about trick-or-treating? The little event where kids (and sometimes short adults) go out door-to-door and ask for candy? Well, this little tid-bit hasn't been adopted yet, or at least as far as I know. Perhaps in little towns that adopted the Western Halloween traditions, but for now at the very least it's not yet done and perhaps never will.It took roughly a decade to go from not celebrating it at all to totally commercializing the holiday and making it one of the biggest adopted holiday of the year. Yet, it's still growing at a rapid pace and next year's Halloween will likely be even bigger!
