A typhoon was moving toward Minamidaito island, about 400 kilometers east of Okinawa, on Tuesday morning, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. At 12 noon, Typhoon No. 3 was located 80 kilometers southwest of the island with wind speeds of between 39 and 73 mph (33 and 64 knots).<br/>
The agency said the typhoon is expected to bring heavy showers and thunderstorms to Okinawa and parts of Kyushu, with up to 200 mm of rain forecast through Wednesday.<br/>
The agency said that by Wednesday midday, the typhoon will likely be downgraded to a Category 1 storm.
