Seven years ago, Dragon Ball fans around the world shed tears of sadness and perhaps many couldn't find purpose in life anymore because of the release of one of the most horrific adaptations, no- movie of all time came to theaters with high expectations and low delivery. It was so bad that it is quite literally one of the top 5 worst box office films of all time. It's so bad that anyone who's ever sat to watch the reviews alone squirmed like they were watching demon-spawns possessing what could have been great talent. It was, truly a masterpiece of its own kind to say the least, but the screen writer, Ben Ramsey took the time to apologize to everyone and explained what had happened. Here's what he had to say.
I knew that it would eventually come down to this one day. Dragonball Evolution marked a very painful creative point in my life. To have something with my name on it as the writer be so globally reviled is gut wrenching. To receive hate mail from all over the world is heartbreaking. I spent so many years trying to deflect the blame, but at the end of the day it all comes down to the written word on page and I take full responsibility for what was such a disappointment to so many fans. I did the best I could, but at the end of the day, I "dropped the dragon ball".I went into the project chasing after a big payday, not as a fan of the franchise but as a businessman taking on an assignment. I have learned that when you go into a creative endeavor without passion you come out with sub-optimal results, and sometimes flat out garbage. So I’m not blaming anyone for Dragonball but myself. As a fanboy of other series, I know what it’s like to have something you love and anticipate be so disappointing.I hope I can make it up to you by creating something really cool and entertaining that you will like and that is also something I am passionate about. That’s the only work I do now.
- Ben Ramsey
So there you have it, an apology after 7-years but will people accept his apology or still hold a grudge over his offensive attack against a fanbase? I personally think that he has genuinely learned his lesson, after all, amateurs become professionals after making seriously costly mistakes like he has done. To dive into a franchise that holds a cult obsession without even caring for it is only asking for trouble. Look at M. Night. Shyamalan with Avatar the last Air Bender. He only got on board because he saw his kid watch it and thought he could make a movie but he knew virtually nothing about the series.
Plot twist?Passion should always lead creative positions, it should never be just for the money. We see this in video games, anime, manga, and movies all the time. Which ones have passion and which ones are simply there just to get a fat paycheck? If you ask me, I'm very happy to see that Ben Ramsey has seen the light and understood to only follow passion in this industry. Perhaps he'll make it big, perhaps he'll only work on indie stuff, who knows? But I say give him a second chance. What do you think?
