In a surprising turn of events, Nintendo switched their online subscription policy from free to paying with the new Nintendo Switch game console. This is entirely different than their old philosophy of providing free online game subscriptions but those wanting to play Splatoon 2 or Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will have to pay up every month. Nintendo did not yet announce how much it would cost, however there will be a free subscription until Fall of 2017.
While not all details have been unveiled yet, what we do know is that it will be similar to Xbox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus. Subscribers to Switch’s online services will be given a “free” virtual console game of their choice every month but at the end of the month the game gets removed from the user’s game library which differs from both Xbox and PlayStation’s model where the games remain active for the duration of the subscription.
Nintendo says that the subscription will not be required to access the eShop, friends, and social media features of Switch and that it will only be made available to US, Canada and Mexico at launch. There are no words on what that means for Japanese and European players for if they will also have to follow a subscription model or when it will happen.
