Hello everyone! I am back from my mini-vacation and honestly I feel like I need to sleep for another week because I had spent it overworking my body in my big garden. Pics of those coming after the rain later this week but you will have to follow my J Blog of life to see. But enough of that, I feel refreshed mentally and ready to complete Jappleng. Huzzah!

This week in Updates
Club Jappleng is the very last major section to complete, and while not every section is thoroughly complete with all of their features, they are ready for public release. Club Jappleng on the other hand still needs work, and that's what this week will be used for.

After Club Jappleng is complete, Jappleng will progressively get better and better with weekly updates that add features and functionality. Regular new content will be added and we will spend a lot of time growing our members and staff to make this a great fun site to participate on.

This is the last week
I can't stress this enough, this is the last week for major updates. Unless I fall ill or earth suddenly gets raided by demons in an apocalypse, this is the last week for major updates. Everything else is merely bug fixes, new content and features that will be done over time.

Release Party will be announced
An announcement will be made next week regarding a release party to kick-start Jappleng. Please look forward to this!

Contrary to what I just said yesterday, I will probably not get time to finish Club Jappleng by friday because there was a sudden change in plans.  Let me explain.

Today: I am taking a break. I'm so tired and beat. I worked until 9:45p outside doing hard physical labor.  Then I was able to fall asleep close to 11 then woke up at 12:30 because of a mouse. I laid down traps but I really wanted to kill it so I ended up staying awake until 3am. I really love mice, they are cute and genetically they are so close to us but a mouse in the house means it made its way in from the vents and probably chewed is way through it. Meaning there's maybe a dozen more mice under the house and they all have to go before they eat the house / contaminate the rooms and eat our food. I just rescued a snake, it should be eating the mice by now! (Read about that here)

Anyway, I woke up 3 hours later so that I could go to my annual physical.  Blood drawn + 3hrs of sleep after a hard physical week = mentally and physically drained, too much to be programming.

Tomorrow: We're no longer going to Canada so that means that the extra day off that was given to my waifu might be used tomorrow, the day before her birthday (Since it's Friday). I don't want to give her the cold shoulder especially on such an important long weekend. Originally she was supposed to take the day off next week but I'm guessing she will use it tomorrow.

Canada trip cancelled: As mentioned the trip to Canada next week is cancelled. I was looking forward to it but now it's a shame that I can't go. With that said, Jappleng will be completed sooner than anticipated smile

A few days ago I saved a snake after it had gotten caught in a garden net.  It was stuck there for over a day and I thought it had died but upon poking it with my foot, it still moved. So.... Being that it wasn't a poisonous snake and in fact it is known to eat poisonous snakes (cannibalism?) I decided to rescue it, sort of.

The snake was annoyingly tangled in a brand new net, so there were only two ways to get it out. I could either decapitate it into small pieces and pull it through the holes or I could rescue it. There was also the option of leaving it for nature to take care of it of course. I chose to rescue it because well, I felt bad for it. First of all, it got caught in my netting, meaning it was just lurking around looking for mice and then got caught in the net.  Plus, it would be a pretty terrible death to die of starvation, I'm sure snakes take many days to die from that.

I don't particularly care to touch snakes or get near them, I let them be and that's about as far as I go with snakes. They are emotionless and cannot learn them since they lack the mental capacity. Perhaps that's why religion such as Christianity often associates snakes with demons? Well, snakes can tolerate people and other things given that they are no threat and are used to it but the concept of love / like is impossible. So loving a snake is only a one-way relationship :P

With that said, I was a bit nervous considering I've never been bitten by a snake before, nor have I ever held one bare-handed. The snake had the netting all around its face  and mouth so it couldn't bite me even if it tried so I felt pretty relieved for that reason alone. It took about a good 30-40 minutes before i got the netting cut from its body, I was being slow and extra careful because the string was so tight on its body and it suffered several wounds from it.

The hard part was now happening, I was face to face with the snake. My hands were no more than an inch away from its mouth and I was freeing its face as much as I could. Eventually it got so scary that I had to use a stick to hold its little head down while cutting the string but sadly I couldn't remove it all before it "ran" away.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend saving a snake unless you knew it wasn't poisonous. Snakes get a bat rep because of the few that are but most are not. This snake must have been about 4-5ft long maybe? But it definitively thought that I was going to eat it for dinner the way it looked at me in the end. It was standing tall being still and telling me to get away, which I did.

Hopefully the little snake found a way to remove the last bit of string from its mouth, and I wish I could say it was a perfect recovery but life isn't a Disney movie. I hope that one day, it will eat all the mice it can eat near my house. lol smile

It seems that every month goes by and Jappleng isn't complete, but as the months go by, there's usually a significant amount of updates made. I do wish I could work on Jappleng from morning til night, it's not possible, nor is it healthy. I have a lot of things to do during the evenings and from experience, sitting for long periods of time is not healthy -- and it can cause strokes!

I get about 6-7hrs a day to work on Jappleng these days which is reasonable, but not enough.  A single feature can take several hours to days if there's an annoying technological barrier. For instance, I spent about 8hrs trying to implement a custom scrollbar for the IMChatv3 and wasn't able to do so in the end. I decided to leave it be and go back to it eventually. For some reason I can't get it to respond correctly with a fluid layout. But anyway, sometimes I do get into these kinds of situation where a lot of R&D is required to make something work because Jappleng is using 100% its own code everywhere (except the jquery framework).

Jappleng is an art of its own, and it should take a staff of at least 6 people to develop, and 3 for content. Yet, I'm at a disadvantage because I don't have the money to finance 9 staff members let alone myself. It would be nice if I were born rich, or perhaps if a bank or someone were to loan me money but Jappleng is all an experiment and there's the possibility that it won't make a single cent from sponsorship or microtransactions.

But I remain optimistic to make Jappleng my career because it's been my dream for so long and I know that many will benefit from this project. Yet, with only Club Jappleng remaining as the big determinator between complete and incomplete, it is quickly becoming my rival.

I expect to complete the basics of club Jappleng this week and the final bits and pieces next week. Afterwards it's all about content and bug fixing the site, at which point it would be a great time to advertise the project. Sadly, I didn't make the Summer deadline to convince teachers to use Jappleng for their online Japanese program but there's always winter. Until then, we can make this site grow really big and improve every feature until teachers really want to use it! Bwahaha~

There's also a possibility that I might go to Canada next weekend, which can change the deadline by a week.
If I don't go to Canada, I expect Jappleng to be fully functional by June 2. If I do go to Canada, I expect the same but by June 7.

I'm pretty confident with those dates smile

It's been a while since I last posted an update status and I apologize, I've been hard at work developing many new features for Jappleng all around and didn't get the time to post the status updates. Now however I can!

The new IMChatv3 was completely redone from scratch! v2 took about 3 weeks to build but mainly because after the first week I was having trouble putting time onto the site. v3 however only took 2 full days and it works wonderfully! It's not complete yet but it's significantly better than the previous version, if anything because the design doesn't burn my eyes and there aren't any memory leaks.

For a full list of features take a look at:
https://www.jappleng.com/news/articles/exclusive/594/the_new_imchat_version_3_

Onwards to Club jappleng....
I've done significant progress with club Jappleng, so much so that it's almost complete. I can make a Friday deadline for sure!

Things that are complete:
  • The Poll System is complete.
  • Quiz system is nearly done.
  • Link backers is complete.
  • Gallery is complete.
  • Activity history is complete.
  • Hierarchy permission system is complete.
  • Leveling system is complete.
  • Category / Subcategory system is complete.
  • Club Member system is complete.

  • Club Wiki
  • Event System
  • Actual Details Page
  • Treasury System
  • Unlockable System
  • Club creation wizard
  • Link backer wizard
  • Club Jappleng Portal and related pages

Estimated Time of Completion:

Even System, Details Page, Link backer wizard and club wiki will all be released next week but the remaining features should be available by Friday. A public release will be made if it happens.

Upon the completion of Club Jappleng, I will make various updates to J-Blogs and then move forward to other parts of Jappleng that need bugs fixed. There's a lot to do but on the first week of June, I will be done with Jappleng and will be ready to advertise throughout the world.

Today I'm gonig to attempt to create a Quiz system for Club Jappleng which will be portable to the education system. The Quiz system will probably have two modes to it. Personality type of Quiz and right/wrong answer kind of quiz. Wish me luck~

Developing the Poll / Quiz system was more difficult than I had originally anticipated, and the reason being was because on how I was attempting to go about uploading the data.  (Screenshots of the quiz inside!)

base64 vs original (The compression story)
base64 is essentially the file itself turned into a lossless version. For instance, if you were to upload a jpg as a base64 png, it would be significantly larger in file size but you could at the very least use HTML5 canvas to edit the image before uploading like you could in photoshop. The downside is that unless you write a very complex javascript library to compress the file prior to upload, it will be about 33% larger in file size.

This is how I normally go about doing things for avatars, and smaller image files simply because I want to give the user the option to crop or resize their images. But for the Poll system, the images are not cropped, they remain their original file dimensions and a 1000x1000 image can easily become 7mb in size depending on the complexity of the image. This is why I didn't use this method, because I didn't want it to be a burden for those on mobile or limited bandwidth networks.

Uploading a file with data
This is where I got into a little snag, I thought it would be fairly straightforward to upload a file with an array of other information but it wasn't. Traditionally, Jappleng uses jQuery's POST method to do all of the dirty work, but sometimes that isn't the case. When it came down to uploading a file and other data asynchronously, I couldn't correctly send the file's information. I had to return to AJAX and do it that way but as it turned out I couldn't just upload a file at the same time of sending the other information due to how JSON works.

With plenty of research done, I came to the conclusion that there wasn't enough documentation to explain the situation well for me. So I decided to improvise my own setup. First, the information is passed, and if there's an image attached, it won't finalize the post. If there isn't, the poll will get uploaded immediately. If the image is attached, it sends an OK signal back to the user asking for the file, then if it receives the file, it will continue the process. If it can't continue the process like let's say the user aborted, or there was a security issue it will not publish the poll.

Security is crucial
I'm more of a PHP developer than a Javascript developer, I spend most of my time in PHP and because of that I'm highly in tuned with security. All data that goes through Jappleng's CMS / Web engine ends up getting thoroughly scanned for any openings. Images also get dissected for malicious code and it gets really crazy.

This is how the end result looks like

Moving forward
Now I have a nifty poll system ready to be used for Club Jappleng! It took 2 1/2-days to develop and it was more complicated than it should have been. The code can be re-used (mostly) to create club Quizzes which will come in a bit. For now I will finalize a few more things on the poll system and move on to the Wiki.
