I don't know if I'll be able to use honorifics if I go to Japan, it seems difficult to remember but if I do forget to add it, will someone get angry at me if I do?  I was also wondering when it's appropriate to drop honorifics with friends, is it something you don't do?

Good question! You should really try your best to remember to use honorifics, it might be easier if you use get in the habit of saying Mr./Miss/Mrs whenever you're talking to someone else who's an adult in English. This might get you into a habit that makes it easier to translate when you speak in Japanese. This is a theory, I have no idea if it'll work or not.

As for your question about if it's necessary and it really is. You can get away with it as a foreigner but if you plan on interacting with people a lot, it's best if you get into the habit of using honorifics. Japanese people know that Americans don't really use honorifics so much and it's a big culture shock like "wow, Americans are so impolite! / disrespectful" kind of thing. But it's fairly well understood that foreigners might not fully understand this concept but if you can speak fairly well in Japanese you shouldn't have an excuse for forgetting it because it should be on top of your priority list of getting it down.

Dropping honorifics with friends is well, not too common. You can get away with this with certain people but with most,  you will just get them upset with you. This is particularly true with older people especially those whom are over 50 will get really angry with you for showing disrespect even if that person you are referring to is your girlfriend. People your age who know you're struggling with honorifics won't mind, probably, and likely try to correct you. But if you make friends and you frequently ignore honorifics, they will likely stop talking to you because you seem to them like a rude person.

Rule of thumb: Never drop the honorific!

I hope this helps smile
