Personally I have never tasted mochi but it's on my bucket list of foods to try.

I'm not too big of a fan on mochi, it's alright though. There are two layers to mochi. the outer-layer has a more soft but chewy type of texture. It kind of feels like velvet. As you bite through the mochi, you feel the ice cream in the center which can be any flavor. The combination of textures isn't for everyone but it is a very Japanese thing to enjoy as Japanese cuisine likes to blend these types of textures together. Think Katsudon, ordinarly you wouldn't want to have crispy deep friend chicken softened by a sauce but that's the purpose and it works.
Pounding mochi is actually a really interesting thing to watch too. Two guys with a giant mallet and a guy flipping the mochi in the center. They go so fast, it's impressive that there aren't many flat hands that come out of it.
