A brief tour of different hotspots to view cherry blossoms
Incomplete 0 / 5

It’s that time of year again where we can look forward to the trees and flowers blooming. Spring in Japan is an especially exciting time of the year, when the country bursts into vibrant colors of pink and white as the cherry blossom, or sakura, season arrives. People gather at parks, temples, and gardens to experience the beauty and symbolism of these fleeting flowers, and to participate in the traditional Japanese custom of hanami, or cherry blossom viewing.

Let’s first explore Tokyo. It’s one of the best places to see cherry blossoms in Japan. The bustling capital city that is home to many of the popular hanami spots. Our first stop is Ueno Park, located in the heart of the city. It’s one of the most famous spots for cherry blossom viewing, with over 1,000 cherry trees lining the paths and creating a stunning canopy of pink and white petals. Alternatively, you can visit Yoyogi Park or Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden which are also popular destinations, offering more peaceful and relaxed atmospheres for hanami.

Next, we head over to Kyoto, the former capital of Japan. It’s another must-visit destination for cherry blossom viewing. Maruyama Park, located in the heart of the city is one of the most popular spots with over 800 cherry trees that create a breathtaking view when in full bloom. The Philosopher's Path is a scenic canal path that is lined with cherry trees and is a must-see location. Ninnaji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to a rare type of cherry blossom tree called Omuro cherry which blooms later than other varieties and has a unique pink and white color.

Now we explore Osaka, Hiroshima, and Nara which are all popular destinations for cherry blossom viewing, each with their own unique hanami spots. In Osaka, Osaka Castle Park offers a stunning view of the castle surrounded by over 4,000 cherry trees. Yes, you heard this right, over 4,000 cherry blossom trees! In Hiroshima, the Peace Memorial Park and Shukkeien Garden are popular locations for hanami, while in Nara, the Isuien Garden and Yoshino Mountain are must-visit spots for cherry blossom enthusiasts.

But it's not just the major cities that offer stunning cherry blossom views. Himeji Castle, located in Hyogo prefecture, is one of Japan's most famous castles and offers a spectacular view when surrounded by cherry blossoms. Hirosaki Castle, located in Aomori prefecture, is known for its impressive cherry blossom festival, which features over 2,500 cherry trees and nighttime illuminations.

In addition to traditional hanami spots, many modern and urban areas offer unique and creative ways to enjoy cherry blossoms. Rooftop bars, observation decks, and even cherry blossom themed cafes and restaurants offer a new perspective on these iconic flowers. Local festivals and events, such as the Kitano Tenmangu Shrine Plum Blossom Festival in Kyoto, offer an opportunity to enjoy cherry blossoms along with traditional food, music, and entertainment.

Planning ahead, arriving early and being prepared for large crowds can help ensure a more enjoyable experience as cherry blossom viewing can be a very crowded experience. Now that you know where to go, or at least have a list of (tough) choices to make, it is time to make those reservations, grab a bento box, a bottle of sake, and head out to experience the magic of sakura season in Japan!
